Multinational pharmaceutical company: Licensing prioritization in China
A major multinational pharmaceutical company turned to GB for help in outlining China's biopharmaceutical pipeline. Using our resources and network, GB provided the universe of potential in-licensing candidates available in China and added additional value through judgments on IP protection and quality of research. These results were used by the client to adjust its business development activities and prioritize opportunities in China. GB assisted the client in follow up meetings with targets.
Multinational pharmaceutical company: Partner screening and due diligence
A major multinational pharmaceutical company turned to GB after several failed attempts using internal and external resources to collect information on potential R&D outsourcing partners. GB investigated China’s industrial landscape along several target outsourcing areas for the client. GB created a comprehensive provider list, contacted potential partners, and segmented the targets according to criteria developed by GB and the client. The information collected was “good data, comprehensive, and thorough,” according to the client. Based on the findings, the client sent internal teams of scientists and engineers to engage the partners and conduct the final selection.
US-based biotechnology company: Outsourcing management
A medium sized biotechnology company based in the US was interested in outsourcing part of their discovery operations to China. GB helped this company with all stages of the outsourcing process, from the selection of partners to the execution and management of the project.
China-based biotechnology company: Strategic positioning and investor communications
A China-based biotechnology innovator had developed a platform technology with multiple applications. This company and its investor turned to GB to help position the firm for an additional capital raise. GB conducted a comparables analysis and helped the company to create communication materials that reflected the potential of the company’s technology and management team. The company successfully raised additional capital.
China-based biotechnology company: Strategy development
A Chinese bioremediation-focused biotechnology startup needed to understand the development of the bioremediation industry in the United States and how that development could impact its strategy. GB outlined the industry history, projected potential growth, brought focus to the drivers of the competitive environment, identified the technology barriers, and detailed potential competitor/partners, highlighting the impacts of these areas on China’s industry. The client used these analyses to rationalize its initiatives, adjust its capital allocation, set benchmarks for its performance, and set initial discussions with potential partnership/strategic investors.
Hong Kong-based private equity: Acquisition due diligence
A Hong-Kong based investment group was considering taking a controlling equity stake in a mainland-based publicly listed company. GB conducted industry due diligence on two of the company’s key divisions, outlining the business drivers and technology landscape within China and worldwide. GB also explored potential synergies between one division of the company and another portfolio company of the investor. GB’s analyses were critical in the final decision making process. After a successful acquisition, GB helped to train the target’s management through a series of workshops.
Hong-Kong based venture capital: Valuation and due diligence
A corporate investor required valuation and due diligence services related to a potential acquisition target in a fast-developing technology-related industry. GB created a relevant valuation model, worked with the client to investigate assumptions, coordinated the due diligence process, and participated in negotiations with the target. A venture capital fund with a significant portfolio in the US had made an investment into a company that had been collaborating with a Chinese partner. The fund turned to GB to investigate the status of the collaboration and help to resolve several communication and business challenges that had arisen.
